What is the best practice when an invoice due date falls on a Saturday or Sunday? Is it best practice to pay on the following Monday or previous Friday?

If you have a pre-scheduled ACH or wire payment that falls on a weekend, standard practice for banks is to value-date the day following the weekend (or holiday). Expert David Hay says this is a global practice for e-payments.

However, you must take care with certain payments: credit card payments, utility payments and some government organizations expect payment on or before the due date, and will penalize you if payment is later than the due date.

There is not a universally fixed practice between business customers and vendors, however. It’s a business decision and may depend on the tolerance of the vendor.
