If we are making a donation to an organization and in return our business name is being published as a sponsor on the Web site, or banners, etc., would this be 1099-reportable as advertising?

Advertising is a 1099-reportable service, provided the organization you are paying is not tax-exempt and that the payment was more than $600. A donation you make to an organization is most likely reportable because although the money is not explicitly for advertising, you received advertising services in exchange for the donation.

However, if the organization was a tax-exempt non-profit organization or a corporation, then the payment would not be reportable. The completed W-9 will tell you whether the organization is exempt from 1099 reporting.
