We keep our voided checks, but I am uncertain how long a period of time they should be retained.

Voided checks with backup must be retained to meet the 7-10 year requirement, plus any additional time needed to prove they were not eligible to escheat as unclaimed property, and that varies by the state the checks were issued to. (This would of course not apply to checks that were simply issued in error and then voided, but you must document that as well.)
